THE AUBERGE THROUGH TIME
First Era : Doctor Jones’ summer residence (1875-1920)
The building of the current Auberge Les Sources was originally a summer residence. It was the property of Doctor Samuel B. Jones. In all probability, Dr. Jones had this residence built in the years 1875 and 1880. At the time the summer resort was very popular in La Malbaie, especially on the Boulevard des Falaises, and many very wealthy Americans settled in the area. Former American President William Taft stayed for many years on the exact same Boulevard of La Malbaie, in his summer residence. This period also corresponds to the glory days of the first Manoir Richelieu (1900-1928), when Americans stayed in large numbers in the prestigious hotel.

Second Era: Residence of Colonel Louis-Joseph Adjutor Amyot (1920-1970)

Around 1920, the presence of Americans decreased in the area, thus, Mrs. Gertrude Crosby Jones, widow of Doctor Samuel B. Jones, sold the residence to Colonel Louis-Joseph Adjutor Amyot, a French-Canadian businessman, on June 9th, 1920. Mr. Amyot was called the Colonel but was in fact an honorary lieutenant-colonel. He had inherited from his father, the very successful company of the Dominion Corset for women. Colonel Amyot was perceived as a very rigid businessman, knowledgeable about financial, commercial, economic, and social affairs. The former workers described him as a man who appreciated luxury. It was therefore not a surprise to see him settle in the heart of the Canadian business elite, so close to the famous Boulevard. Colonel Amyot enjoyed his scotch, that he kept in a beautiful wooden cooler. It is still possible to admire his cooler, which is sitting in the large living room of the current inn to this day.

Third Era: The Auberge (1976 - today)

In the 1970s, many summer residences were transformed into very popular inns. In 1976, Hugues de Merlis acquired the estate and transformed the former residence of Dr. Jones and Colonel Amyot into the Auberge Les Sources. The establishment quickly becomes very popular and enjoys a great reputation. It was managed by Lise Gagnon and René Simard in the 1990s. Subsequently, Evelyne and André Litzelmann became owners of the place for nearly 25 years.
Today, since June 2022, the new owners Cynthia Madore and Alexandre Guérard, accompanied by their son Jules and their poodle Grit, are happy to welcome visitors to their new home.
